The Key to Coffee

There is nothing quite like cradling that warm mug of coffee on a crisp morning and seeing your reflection through the steam in that life-water you have sipped on for years now. But did you know your coffee can be a sneaky source of trouble for your healing body?

Coffee can contain mold, mycotoxins, pesticides, contaminants, and more. Coffee in excess or in the sensitive body can cause anxiety, heart palpitations, headaches, ear ringing, and more. It can also cause adrenal distress and high cortisol levels, which can lead to hormone imbalances that can fuel sugar addiction and so many other irregularities that we within the walls of EE are working to educate on, and you are working hard to combat.

When you take a step back, the reality is that it can be hard to know for sure if it is the coffee… or the toxins within the coffee that are causing the problem. 

What can create even more confusion is that there are quite a large number of studies with statistical evidence that show coffee is preventative against Alzheimer's disease. And that its polyphenols and antioxidants can protect against cancer, depression, and Type 2 Diabetes, among other things. 

Don’t let overwhelm get to you. Remember: you're your own best doctor. Start to assess how you feel your coffee could be affecting you, if at all. Start to make moves to decrease your overall consumption. Or, better yet to test the waters you could try to take a break from it all together if you think it could be a problem.

Personally, I love coffee. Over the last 5 years, we have transitioned in our home to ensure we are actively decreasing potential toxins or poor side effects from coffee. I have listed some of those steps below. Start with one thing and move on to the next when ready.

  1. Switch out your drip coffee maker for a French Press or Pour Over.  Why? Your drip coffee maker's water wells, lines, and parts are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria. Ditch them! While the pour-over might take longer, you will notice a fantastic difference in your mental clarity! 

  2. Chemex Pour Over, and Filters are what we use and love in our home. To keep it warm, we pour it into a double-walled thermal kraft. We use one like this at home and our Stanley at the camper.

  3. Use Distilled water for your coffee.  Why? This will immediately decrease the amount of metals, chemicals, and contaminants you're exposed to because it is the purest water form! You can add trace minerals to coffee if you're drinking it plain. I wouldn't be too worried.

  4. MegaHome is the distiller we have at home.  Fair warning, you won't turn back when you distill your water! 

  5. Swap out that coffee!  Why? You can start to make an impact by swapping to an organic coffee, but I want to challenge you to change to one tested for mold and mycotoxins. This was the last step we made in our coffee journey, and I detoxed for a solid week after we made the transition. 

    1. Purity Coffee has a fantastic variety of brands that support different systems of your body; at our house, we use the Liver Formula and love it (Yes, we do by the five-pound bag. It really makes it a more affordable option!)

    2. LifeBoost Coffee is another great brand, but at a much higher price point.

    3. King Coffee is an EE favorite. Mushrooms and low-acid coffee can hit the spot in a more adaptogenic way. 

  6. Add a pinch of salt to your coffee. NOT table salt. REAL salt. Celtic or Redmonds Real salt are our favorites. Why? This extra to help your adrenals process that caffeine jolt because adrenals thrive on minerals that are found in true salt compounds.
